History: Chulucanas is a town in the Piura Region of Peru famous for its pre-Inca Paleteado style of pottery. The technique includes forming the clay with a simple wooden palette and a rounded stone and beating it into its form. Coloring is done by hand using natural pigments and clays. The pieces are finished by rubbing a soft river stone over the surface until the characteristic sheen is achieved. The dried pieces are fired with locust firewood at 900C in adobe brick ovens. Dark or black pieces are fired at low temperature in the smoke of mango leaves.
