VTG 1900 Theodore Roosevelt Campaign poster? engraved by William Edgar Marshall On the bottom under image it reads: Engraved by Wm Edgar Marshall Copyright 1900 By Wm. E. & Oscar Marshall, New York City Published by Oscar Marshall 711 Broadway, New York City In used condition, some tears to top and bottom and some water staining in the margins toward the bottom. The main image looks good and would look even better framed and matted. Looks in great shape for being 125 years old! Measures 28 1/4" x 21 1/2" Who was William Edgar Marshall (1837-1906)? William was born to Scottish parents in New York City in 1837. At a young age he moved to Washington DC, where he earned a living as a watchmaker. He then worked for the US Treasury Department, where he learned to engrave portraits. In 1858 he was given the rare opportunity to work for the American Bank Note Company, where he spent many years and became one of their best engravers! At the age of 21, he went to Paris to become a painter. He returned back to the United States during the Civil War, when news of the assassination of Lincoln brought him home to paint, from photographs and descriptions, a portrait of the martyred President. William set up his New York studio in 1866, which was located at 711 Broadway, near Washington Square. His home became a popular haunt for artist and writers of the day. He had a humorous, engaging personality, while engaging the anecdotes of Emmerson, Longfellow, Dickens, Hawthorne and Holmes. He died at the age of seventy from pneumonia in his studio, which he kept through the years.
