Tissot Navigator Ref. 45501, Black Dial Automatic Chronograph, c.1975 Vintage Tissot chronographs from the mid-1970s don't get nearly enough attention, and examples in this kind of shape are genuinely hard to find. This Navigator ref. 45501 is incredible. The dial is excellent - black with white subdials and an orange chronograph seconds hand - classic reverse panda arrangement that the era did so well. The orange isn't overdone. It's a single pop of color that ties the whole watch together without screaming for attention. Tissot's typography and dial printing from this period has a restrained quality that makes the design very compelling. The lume on the indices and hands has faded evenly to a warm cream - no uneven aging, no missing plots, just honest patina across the board. The case is in exceptional condition for a 50-year-old watch. The cushion-case architecture reads sharp and there are no signs of significant polishing. The caseback is a screw-down. Inside is the Lemania 1341 - a legitimate automatic chronograph caliber that shows up across several respected brands from the same era. The chronograph is functioning properly. Service history is unknown, so if you're planning to wear this daily and want long-term guaranteed timekeeping, budget for a service. It's running well as-is. This is a vintage column-wheel chronograph, and the crown should only be used in the 1st or 2nd positions only - don't pull it to a 3rd position. Currently on an aftermarket brick-red strap that works remarkably well with the dial - the color relationship between the strap and the orange seconds hand is exactly right. Photographed on a 7" wrist for reference.
