Appointed Reporter on Indian Products and Director of the India Museum, he promoted an Indian museum and institute, influencing the Imperial Institute's creation. Representing India at global exhibitions, he authored works on Indian textiles and economic plants. Watson retired in 1880 and was elected a fellow of the Linnean Society in 1889.
