Since ancient times, Sengu has been carried out at Ise Grand Shrine once every 20 years, and at Izumo Taisha Shrine once every 60 to 70 years. Sengu is a huge project that takes several years to complete, starting with the cutting of trees, the rebuilding and repair of the shrine building, and the dedication of the shrine. The only photographer who received official permission from Ise Grand Shrine and Izumo Taisha Shrine to record up close the two Sengu shrines, which were completed at the same time in 2013, captures the tranquil rituals in detail.
