SHINJUKU GUNTODEN DEN - Katsumi Watanabe 1982 Description [Product Introduction] Katsumi Watanabe is one of Japan’s leading photographers, and “Shinjuku Guntoden Den” is one of his representative photo books. He first became interested in photography while working as a server at a newspaper company. After moving to Tokyo, he learned studio photography at the Tojo Kaikan photo department. Influenced by a senior who worked as a street photographer in Shinjuku, he became a freelance photographer. Using his modest retirement allowance, he purchased an enlarger and wandered the streets of Shinjuku at night, taking portraits—three shots for 200 yen per set. Enduring hunger and minimizing costs, Watanabe continued to photograph people such as the homeless, sex workers, gay people, delinquents, and yakuza. He was fascinated by the “theater of life” woven by these unique individuals and spent his life documenting the drama of Shinjuku. Watanabe described Shinjuku as “a city where hidden things surface and then vanish like bubbles, a city where something new is always happening in the shadows and soon comes out into the open.” Shinjuku is a strange, captivating, harsh yet gentle city. This book is the second photo collection, published in 1982, following his first photo book “Shinjuku Guntoden” released in 1973. [Condition] USED:Good condition. The seller was absolutely fantastic! Their communication was phenomenal, and the order was updated regularly and accurately. The shipping was super fast, and the globe was well packaged (including the original box and filler). I believe the quality is absolutely worth what I paid, especially for an imported item. The waterglobe is exactly as described: in perfect condition! It's beautiful- finding waterglobes that are full with intact glitter can be challenging, but this was perfect!
