This new CD also includes a Anka duet with one of rocks most famous voices, Jon Bon Jovi on one of the worlds most famous songs, Anka's "My Way." Paul Anka follows up 2005's Rock Swings, his popular collection of covers done classic Vegas ¬style, with another collection of unlikely pop and rock songs--also done classic Vegas ¬style. One of the most familiar tricks could be termed the reverse stunt: Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," for instance, is speeded up into a fingersnapping brassy strut. (On Rock Swings, Anka had famously done the exact opposite with "Smells Like Teen Spirit," slowing it down to a loungy pace.) But hey, if it's not broken! After all, Anka is in fine vocal form and he sure knows how to sing against the big-band arrangements. Once again, the best songs are the most unexpected, like the strutting take on the Killers' "Mr. Brightside," the triumphant read of Foreigner's "Waiting for a Girl Like You," which gradually builds up, the super-lush cover of Duran Duran's "Ordinary World," and the strutting "Walking in Memphis." Note that Anka actually picked from his own oeuvre for the albums's two duets: Michael Bublé joins his onetime mentor on 1958's "You Are My Destiny," while Bon Jovi helps out on "My Way" (a song Anka adapted from a French original)--which paradoxically is the least convincing track in the bunch. --Elisabeth VincentelliMore from Paul Anka 30th Anniversary Collection 21 Golden Hits A Body of Work Five Decades Greatest Hits Rock Swings Rock Swings: Live at the Montreal Jazz Festival (DVD) FROM THE ARTIST "It's the most unique, gratifying part of my life," he says. "As years go by, I get different material and things happen that only embellishes what it is. The last ten years have been just the best for me and I'm not even there yet -- the flag's not come down. I get a lot out of it and there's a lot of substance to it," he adds. "I would never do it if I were mediocre or afraid or just went out there to take the money. We've all been to concerts where you sit there and the audience doesn't get it and the guy up there doesn't feel like it and he walks off. I don't know what that is because I go out every night like my balls are on the line. I will not do less than what I did the night before. Even when I'm sick, I work my way around it. There's nothing like that part of my life." Fifty years into his storied career, Anka still believes that being good isn't good enough - you've got to be great. ABOUT THE ARTIST Life's been good to Paul Anka - very good, in fact. But even as he enters his 50th year in the music business, he's not satisfied when his own work is merely good. "For me," he says, "the good has always been the enemy of great. To be great, you've got to forget about that select few who are going to talk about you if you don't quite make the mark -- you've got to challenge yourself."Armed with a sense of tenacity as formidable as his talent, Anka has conquered many challenges over the course of the last five decades, forging a career that's unlike any other in the history of pop. As he made the transition from `50s teen idol to celebrated songwriter to a contemporary torchbearer for all that swings, he has maintained a commitment to quality, bringing his best to whatever he faces. That was as true for the Ottawa teen who called up every record company he could find asking for auditions as it is for the seasoned vocalist who's unafraid to turn songs by Nirvana, Soundgarden and Bon Jovi into swanky big-band extravaganzas. Indeed, Anka's two most recent albums - Rock Swings and now Classic Songs, My Way - have inspired millions of music listeners to not just hear some familiar songs in new ways but to marvel at the enduring ingenuity and integrity of Anka as an artist and performer.See more Country/Region of Manufacture: USA Language: English No Of Discs: 1 Artist: Paul Anka Record Label: Decca Records Release Year: 2007 Missing Information? I've ordered from Rarewaves here in the US and the UK multiple times, and continue to do so. They always seem to have something I can't find anywhere else at all or for a reasonable price. When I purchase used items, they are as described, if not a grade better. Aways a quick turnaround after ordering, every item arrives promptly, professionally packaged. Many orders have free shipping, even for solitary item orders. I never needed a reason to communicate, as I've had no cause. Recommended.
Received item as described and packaged well. Listing indicated shipping was free. Ordered on the 7th but by the 14th noticed it hadn’t been shipped yet. Seller responded quickly saying that during the purchase process that it said it would not be shipped until the 22nd because they use a fulfillment house. I don’t recall seeing anything about delayed shipping during the process or in the listing. While I appreciate the prompt response to my inquiry, other buyers should be aware of delays.
The book was brand still plastic wrapped. Looks exactly like the picture for a reasonable price including shipping. In perfect condition. Shipping was slow and I was worried that I was scammed again. Seller did respond to my message after a day and explained the item would be shipped within a week. The item shipping and tracking was updated by the date they stated. Took about 2 weeks to receive item. I’m usually impressed when item is shipped and received within a week.
