Click images to enlarge Description ?This is an ORIGINAL mail bag or ballot box utilized by the Army for either purpose. This bag was used presumably to transport mail or official correspondence intended for or sent by Army personnel while overseas. It also could be used to receive ballots cast while in the field, although that is just conjecture on my part. The bag is made of very heavy olive drab #7 canvas, with a heavy wire apparatus at the top which threads through a series of metal "wickets" protruding through rectangular grommets and culminates in a wire circle which allows for padlocking. When the bag is full or the mail run needs to be made, the slot in the bag can be covered by extending the flap with the canvas strap all the way over the mail slot and then re-inserting the metal wire apparatus to seal the bag for transporting (see images below). The bag is in VERY GOOD condition, with one small rip in the bottom panel (see last image below). The canvas bag is 24" deep by 15" x 12". Here's an opportunity for the advanced gear collector or re-enactor to obtain a rare piece of gear associated with operations "in the field".
