ABOUT THE ARTIST- Mel Hunter (1927-2004) was a 20th Century American illustrator. Key aspects of his biography: Early Life & Self-Taught Artist: Born in Oak Park, Illinois, Hunter endured a challenging childhood and later taught himself illustration in his spare time, eventually landing a technical illustrator job at Northrop Aircraft Corp in California. Science Fiction & Technical Illustration: He gained renown for his science fiction illustrations, particularly his signature whimsical robots featured on The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction covers. He was also a successful technical and scientific illustrator for clients like The Pentagon and Hayden Planetarium, and published books like The Missilemen and Strategic Air Command. Move to Naturalistic Lithography: In 1967, Hunter moved to Vermont and shifted his focus to creating naturalistic lithographic prints inspired by his surroundings. He also created a series of watercolors of "Birds of the Northeast" and signed a contract for ecological books for children. Innovator in Lithography: Hunter developed and published the "Mylar Method" for lithography in his 1984 textbook, The New Lithography, which remains widely used today. He passed away in 2004.
