John Joseph Hughes (1838–1909) “On the Wye, near Ross” Oil on canvas, signed lower left “J.J. Hughes” Presented in its original ornate gilt Victorian frame. A beautiful 19th-century English landscape depicting cattle crossing the River Wye near Ross-on-Wye, with farmers and horse-drawn carts on a country path. Richly detailed with warm earthy tones and atmospheric sky — a fine example of the Victorian pastoral school. Artist: John Joseph Hughes (British, 1838–1909) was known for his detailed landscapes and pastoral views of England and Wales. His works often capture the rural charm of the Wye and Severn valleys and are admired for their realism and harmony.
