Here’s a really cool, and quite rare set of Jelly Roll Morton records for a serious collector or fan. These are the rarer, limited edition box sets of 78rpm discs from 1947, not the more-common LP reissues. My dad purchased these at a live auction several years ago. Although I'm a huge fan of this music, I don't have a proper 78rpm setup or room to put one. So it's time to make sure these historically important sets end up with someone who can appreciate them. Here's a rundown. The good: This listing includes seven, incredibly rare sets from the series entitled "The saga of Mr. Jelly Lord." (Volumes 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8). Matched sets from 1947 (set number 193) on red vinylite 78rpm version, not the more-common LP reissue My hunch is that the records were not played all that much (underneath the grime, more on that below, they look pretty good) No breaks on any of the discs No missing discs from the included sets I have moved all the discs into poly-lined sleeves to reduce the risk of damage These sets will all be packed with extreme care The bad: It seems like these sets must have been stored in an attic or barn at some point. They are in desperate need of a cleaning. They are being sold as-is. Although I did my best to inspect visually (see below), I have no way to play-test them. On the jackets you will find scuffs, worn edges, fading, cobwebs, discoloration, stains, etc. Many of the sides have at least some light surface marks (see below) Volume 4 is missing. As are any volumes after 8. I did not clean the records/boxes Here’s a detailed breakdown of the contents and my best guess about condition, but again, please know that it is just a guess based on visual inspection. I (Jazz Started in New Orleans) — Jacket/Book: This one is the dirtiest of the set; the cover has a good deal of discoloration and some possible mildew. Scuffs, worn edges. —Disc jm1/jm2 (Tiger Rag/Tiger Rag/Panama) - Some black streaking in the vinyl itself. I could see two scratches which did not feel deep to the touch, but it’s possible the dust has obscured others. —Disc jm3/jm4 (Mr. Jelly Lord/“Sweet Papa Jelly Roll”/Orig. Jelly Roll Blues”) - similar condition, some visible surface scratches and scuffs, none of which looked egregious —Disc jm5/jm6 (Boy at the Piano/ Ancestry and Boyhood) - Similar condition to disc 2 —Disc jm7/jm8 (Hyena Stomp/The Miserere/Boyhood Memories) - Similar condition to disc 2 Jelly Roll Morton - the saga of mr. Jelly lord vol. II (way down yonder . . . .) —Jacket/Book: This one is dusty and definitely faded towards the edges. There’s also a water stain on the bottom right. Scuffs, worn edges. —Disc jm9/jm10 (The Animule Ball/the animule ball, part 2/Scat Song ) - This disc looks quite good under the dust. I did see a scuff on side jm9 —Disc jm11/jm12 (“shouting the agate”/“no doubt the finest food”/“see see rider”) - similar condition to jm9/jm10 - light surface scratches and scuffs —Disc jm13/jm14 (see see rider concl./New Orleans Funeral. Part 1.) - Similar condition to disc jm11/12 —Disc jm15/jm16 (New Orleans Funeral., Part 2; New Orleans funeral., Part 3) - this disc looks dirtier for some reason. I noticed at least one deeper scuff on one side Jelly Roll Morton - the saga of mr. Jelly lord vol. III (jazz is . . . strictly music) —Jacket/Book: Color seems pretty good on this one, but there is dust/grime/possible mildew, edge wear, scuffs etc. —Disc jm17/jm18 (discourse on jazz, part 1/part 2; Kansas City Stomp part 1) - some more noticeable scuffs and wear on this one, but I did not see any deep gouges. Some black streaking in vinyl itself —Disc jm19/jm20 (Kansas City stomp conc./ Discourse on Jazz. Part 4) - this disc looks pretty good to me other than the grime. Light surface marks. —Disc jm21/jm22 (Randall’s rag/maple leaf rag pt 1./maple leaf rag. Conical/maple leaf rag) - similar to jm19/jm20, although a bit dirtier and one more noticeable scuff on outer edge of one side —Disc jm23/jm24 (King Porter Stomp/He had a yen for my style/you can have it) - disc looks pretty good other than desperate need for cleaning/some light surface marks Jelly Roll Morton - the saga of mr. Jelly lord vol. V (bad man ballads) —jacket/book: color seems a little faded on this one but not terrible, water stain bottom right, edge wear/scuffs etc./gouge on back cover —Disc jm-33/jm34 (Aaron Harris part 1/2)- no deep gouges or scratches that I could see, but there are more scuffs on this disc —disc jm-35/jm36 (Aaron Harris conclusion./Robert Charles pt 1./concl.) -disc looks pretty good other than desperate need for cleaning/some light surface marks —Disc jm37/jm38 (They were tough babies/Georgia skin game, pt. 1) - disc looks pretty good other than desperate need for cleaning/some light surface marks —Disc jm39/jm40 (Georgia skim game, pt.2/conc.) - this is one of the dirtier discs/no deep gouges or scratches that I could see, but there are more scuffs on this disc Jelly Roll Morton - the saga of mr. Jelly lord vol. VI (the jazz piano soloist) —Jacket/Book: Color seems pretty good on this one, but there is dust/grime/possible mildew, edge wear, scuffs etc., water stain bottom right —disc jm41/jm42 (the pearls part 1./concl) - this disc looks pretty good to me other than the grime. Light surface marks. —disc jm43/jm44 (Pep/ain’t misbehavin) - some more noticeable scuffs and wear on this one, but I did not see any deep gouges. Some black streaking in vinyl itself —disc jm45/jm46- some more noticeable scuffs and wear on this one, but I did not see any deep gouges. Pretty minimal scuffing. Some edge wear. —discjm47/jm48 (Tony Jackson, Alfred wilson, Albert Carroll and kid ross/sammy Davis and Tony Jackson pretty baby) - disc looks pretty good but there were some visible marks. Nothing super deep, but I could feel with my finger, black streaking —discjm49/jm50 (mamie’s blues/the crazy chord rag) - disc looks quite good other than needing cleaning. Light surface marks. —discjm51/jm52 (the game kid/game kid wouldn’t work/buddy Carter) -similar —discjm53/jm54 (the game kid/game kid wouldn’t work/buddy Carter) - one side looks quite good, the other has some visible surface marks Jelly Roll Morton - the saga of mr. Jelly lord vol. VIII (jelly and the blues) —Jacket/Book: This one is dusty and definitely faded towards the edges. Scuffs, worn edges. —disc jm55/56 (wolverine blues) - disc looks pretty good but I did see some light scuffs/marks —disc jm57/58 (Michigan water blues/ low down blues) - side 57 looks pretty good/side 58 has an uglier scuff towards the outside, didn’t feel deep but hard to say for certain without play test —disc jm59/60 (winning’ boy no. 1/the murder ballad) - disc looks pretty good, other than need for a clean.
