Offered here is a charming matched pair of hand-colored etchings by Hans Figura (Austrian, 1898–1978), widely recognized for his finely etched and aquatint-colored European city scenes. These are believed to be silk aquatints or aquatint/drypoint etchings with watercolor washes, a method Figura employed heavily in the 1940s to early 1950s. The first etching captures the Saint-Germain-des-Prés quarter of Paris with the famed Café des Deux Magots in the foreground. Figures bustle under umbrellas amid early automobiles on a rain-slicked street. The second etching depicts the Palace of Justice by the River Seine, complete with a vibrant flower market scene. This composition is known in other catalogs as part of an edition of 150, though the full pencil inscription may be hidden beneath the mat.
