Description
In May 1800, Dudley Adams obtained the patent for his New Patent Portable Telescope which included a new form of sleeve fitting inside the draw tubes to keep them steady when extended, enabling more draw tubes to be used, resulting in a more compact telescope. This fine example measures just 4½" (140mm) closed, yet extends to an impressive 30½" (780mm) when all 8 draw tubes are fully drawn. Signed 'ADAMS'S, New Patent Portable Telescope, 60 Fleet Str.t LONDON ' on the first draw, Dudley Adams worked at that address between 1796 to 1821, during which time he was instrument maker to George III and optician to the Prince of Wales. Adams made this model in different sizes, but not many survive and those that remain are mostly in museums, including the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. A much sought after telescope with a wood veneered barrel, it's in very good condition with undamaged lenses, giving a clear focused image through a 40mm diameter objective and fully disassembles for access to all lenses. Weighing just under 650 grams, it does come with a card case, but please note this is a modern replacement and not the original case.
