Antique Hand-colored 18 th Century Prints of Englishmen George Edwards Edwards’ early hand-colored prints are among our favorite bird illustrations. His major work, published in London (with a title too long to quote), 1741 to 1764, contains prints of mammals, fish, reptiles, and insects as well as of birds from many parts of the world. His birds are more life-like than illustrations that preceded him, and his renderings of abbreviated natural settings, including rich foliage, are charming. Many 18 th and early 19 th century bird prints are quite small and don’t show up terribly well on some walls; not so with the larger prints of George Edwards. In his Fine Bird Books 1700- 1900, author Sacheverell Sitwell writes of Edwards: “At its date of issue the Natural History and Gleanings was one of the most important of all Bird Books, both as a Fine Bird Book and a work of Ornithology. It is still high on each list.” We had to look long and hard over many years to acquire prints 150 or more years old that are still in excellent condition, as our offering of Edwards are. Be careful elsewhere -- there are photo repros out there that can fool, some even of the correct sizes for 18 th century Edward prints. They’re worth almost nothing. Here is an original Edwards print showing 2 swan species: Mute Swan on left & a probable Bewick’s Swan on right. Published in London, Septem-ber 1743, saying on print "Plate 150. " In excellent condition, one small original black spot upper left not in image area; ca . 9 ¼” x 12.” $160
