Description
Antique Hand-colored Prints of Englishman Edward Donovan Edward Donovan (1768-1837) was the artist and organizer for several volumes on natural history, especially birds, all published in London, 1794 to 1826. The print offered here is from his “The Natural History of British Birds” in 5 volumes, published 1792-97. We find his birds convincing and often doing something , not as static as sticks as with some other 18 th century and earlier bird images. And his sketches of natural settings are charming. We would offer more hand-colored prints by Donovan were they not rather small, so that framed and matted they make less impressive statements than the larger prints of such contemporaries as George Edwards. But for sheer accuracy of his birds along with period charm, Donovan’s prints are superb, little gems we think. One might well frame two or more prints together for a larger impact. Here an adult male Smew . This striking Eurasian duck, found mostly in northern oceans, is one of the family’s most beautiful we think. This charming print is in excellent condition; it comes with two pages on the species from the text of the book in which the print was published. Ca. 5 ¼” w x 9” tall. $38
