Description

Antique Hand-colored Bird Print of Englishman John Gould John Gould was responsible in his busy life for the creation of several thousand hand-colored bird prints, which appeared in his publications covering birds of the British Isles, Australia, New Guinea, and several other regions of the world. Though no prints left Gould’s workshops without his part in their creation and without his personal approval, Gould was not himself much of a painter. Gould relied throughout his long career on the expert skills of several superb painters who worked under him and often to Gould’s general designs; their names normally appear on the prints along with Gould’s. The quality achieved by Gould hand- colored prints is high in-deed, and the prints are large though not the elephant folio super size of those of John J. Audubon. Gould’s works were published from the 1830s to the 1880s. Gould prints are limited as his illustrated folio books were not issued in great numbers. The prices fetched for better Gould prints continue to rise. Being considerably smaller than Audubons, Gould prints perhaps fit more easily in modern homes and apartments. They are highly accurate via the birds, of great charm, and of lovely colors if not faded -- which many offered online are, so be careful. So determined was Gould to achieve accurate color effects that he employed gold and silver leaf to give reflective shine to the gorgets of some of his hummingbirds, those among the most sought-after of Gould prints. A number of the prints below required the care of a professional paper conservator, at some expense. All that’s done; prints we offer need no such work. We highly recommend Gould prints to you. All we offer are in superior condition, colors bright and correct and of larger birds, which are almost always more impressive than prints of the little ones. Below we use modern common names for the birds de- picted. Will be shipped in a tube. Here a Collared Pratincole pair from “The Birds of Europe,” 1832-1837. Artists credited on print J & E (John and wife Elizabeth) Gould; she who died young, considered an especially talented painter of birds. Print size 21.5” w x14.5” tall, with lovely hand- coloring. One pale spot upper right hardly shows at any distance; short tear upper right will be frame-covered. $350
