Description
Antique hand-colored bird print by Guérin of Wild Turkeys. (Species) and with lovely plants close up, including a foxglove (Digitalis sp. ). Antique Hand-colored Bird Prints from French Book by M. F.-E. Antique Hand-colored Bird Prints from French Book by M. F.-E. Guérin Almost unique in early 19th century bird prints are these presenting birds in very fully delineated natural settings, as organized by Guérin and originally published in Paris, 1833-1834, with a long title that reads in part “Dictionnaire Pittoresque D’HISTOIRE NATURELLE.” In the prints we offer, the name “Adolph Fries” appears lower left on each, apparently indicating the artist involved. We think these rare and little-known prints have great charm, the plants and scenery as carefully and accurately rendered as the birds. Each of these is ca. 7.5” x 11,” so decent sized. Here three North American Wild Turkeys with an unknown, fork-tailed bird on a distant limb (definitely not a N. Amer. species) and with lovely plants close up, including a foxglove (Digitalis sp .). Print in good condition with very light, generalized foxing lower left, and far right, to be mostly covered by a mat and frame. $40
