Description

Antique Hand-colored Prints of Englishmen George Edwards Edwards’ early hand-colored prints are among our favorite bird illustrations. His major work, published in London (with a title too long to quote), 1741 to 1764, contains prints of mammals, fish, reptiles, insects as well as of birds from many parts of the world. His birds are more life-like than illustrations that preceded him, and his lovely renderings of abbreviated natural settings, including rich foliage, are charming. Many 18 th and early 19 th century bird prints are quite small and don’t show up terribly well on some walls; not so with the larger prints of George Ed-wards. In his Fine Bird Books 1700- 1900, author Sacheverell Sitwell writes of Edwards: “At its date of issue the Natural History and Gleanings was one of the most important of all Bird Books, both as a Fine Bird Book and a work of Ornithology. It is still high on each list.” We had to look long and hard over many years to acquire prints 150 or more years old that are still in excellent condition, as these treasures are. Be careful elsewhere -- there are photo repros out there that can fool, even some the correct sizes for 18 th century Edward prints. They’re worth almost nothing. Edwards long prints published in England. Most Edwards prints made in England are on shorter size paper (ca. 9 1/4 “ w x 12” tall). A very few were printed from the same copper plates but on much larger paper (ca. 11.5” w x 19” tall), and some believe these were more carefully hand-colored. They may certainly be trimmed for framing, but we recommend leaving them at least somewhat longer than the regulars to indicate their rarity. Here a tropical dove of some sort, l abeled, “The Green-winged Dove from the East Indies” and print’s number “153.” It's in superb condition with only one small spot on left of plant indentation. Will be shipped in a tube. $170
