Description

This is an amazing and quite substantial vintage oriental round wooden box hand carved from one piece of wood. The top has a relief-carved Shinto temple/shrine Torii entrance gate on the forefront with pagodas and mountains in the background. Beautifully done! The box measures approximately 8“ in diameter by 3-3/4“ tall. Hand carved in calligraphy 久须刀 on the underside. Made in Japan in 1920’s. In Japanese architecture the term hisashi katana ( 久须刀 ) means the entrance (gate to a Shinto temple) with the edge of a roof projecting beyond the sides as a blade of a sword. It marks the boundary between the sanctuary of God and the human world. A fantastic example of oriental carving for a collector. One of a kind. Very special. In excellent condition with original patina. The photos are an integral part of the description. Please view them carefully and message any questions. I am here to help.
