Description

Antique 18kt Gold Mediterranean Coral Cameo Earrings Diana & Apollo Naples 1850. Coral jewels of this quality were particularly associated with Naples and southern Italy. A rare and highly refined pair of antique 18kt yellow gold earrings, each set with a hand-carved Mediterranean coral cameo, most probably made in Naples around 1850. The cameos are carved in warm orangish-red Mediterranean coral and depict two classical divinities: Diana, identified by the crescent moon on her forehead, and Apollo, shown with his distinctive classical hair arrangement. Both figures are rendered in fine relief, with delicate facial features, curled hair, and draped classical garments. The cameos are mounted in elegant 18kt yellow gold settings with an openwork looped border, giving the earrings a light yet highly decorative appearance. The goldwork beautifully frames the vivid coral and enhances the sculptural quality of the carvings. This pair reflects the refined taste of mid-19th-century Italian Grand Tour jewelry, when mythological subjects, classical antiquity, and precious natural materials were especially admired by aristocratic and cultivated European travelers. Coral jewels of this quality were particularly associated with Naples and southern Italy. Lenght cm 3.5 by 2
