Description

1937 Irish Free State Hospitals Sweepstake 10 Shillings Ticket/ GRAND NAT'L RACE. Tickets were assigned to race horses generally taking part in major Irish or British races like this ticket for the 1937 Grand National race at Aintree, UK. But these are unique pieces of Irish and horse racing history. The Irish Free State Hospitals Sweepstakes was a lottery established in 1930 to drum up money for Irish Hospitals as the nation didn't have money to support them. Tickets were assigned to race horses generally taking part in major Irish or British races like this ticket for the 1937 Grand National race at Aintree, UK. The tickets gained popularity in the U.S. but were illegal there. After 1937, the newly introduced Constitution of Ireland changed the name dropping "Free State" from the name of the lottery. The 1937 race at Aintree, located outside of Liverpool, was won by a horse that was aptly named "Royal Mail". I've no idea if B.C. Wood of Greer, South Carolina the owner of this ticket won anything from the horse that "Carried the Mail". But these are unique pieces of Irish and horse racing history. So some variances do occur out of my control. Grading banknotes is contentious between parties. When I offer a grade keep in mind it is my opinion and is not to be projected for you to form a bid/purchase on. However I will admit I normally opine a harsh full grade lower than what is accepted.
