The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth Extracted textually from the Gospel in Greek, Latin, French, and English by Thomas Jefferson With an Introduction Washington: Government Printing Office 1904 First Edition Limited Edition, intended primarily for members of Congress. With an ink stamp that reads "With the Compliments of J. A. Goulden," indicating that this copy was distributed by United States House of Representatives member Joseph Aloysius Goulden of New York. Octavo, 19 pages, followed by a facsimile of the Jefferson Bible. Bound in the original full red leather with ornate gilt decoration to boards and spine. Marbled endpapers. Some rubbing and wear, hinges cracking, discoloration to leather, damage to spine, else in good + condition. The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth, often referred to as the "Jefferson Bible," is a unique work created by Thomas Jefferson around 1820. Compiled for his personal study, Jefferson meticulously cut and pasted passages from the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John to produce a chronological account of Jesus’ teachings and actions, focusing exclusively on his moral philosophy. Omitting miracles, references to divinity, and the Resurrection, Jefferson sought to present Jesus as a moral teacher rather than a divine figure. Originally unpublished during Jefferson’s lifetime, the manuscript was rediscovered by the Smithsonian Institution in 1895 and first published in 1904 by the U.S. Government Printing Office. Initially distributed to members of Congress, the book gained wider recognition over time and remains a significant reflection of Jefferson’s Enlightenment-era skepticism toward organized religion and his admiration for ethical teachings.
