Combe elaborates on the principles of phrenology, explaining the idea that the brain is divided into different areas, each corresponding to specific faculties like intellect, emotion, and personality traits. Combe's work aimed to popularise phrenology by providing an accessible introduction to the theory. He discusses the structure of the brain, the location of mental faculties, and how the development of those faculties can be reflected in the shape of the skull. The book also includes an argument for how phrenology could be used for practical purposes, such as improving education and understanding human behavior. Phrenology was influential during Combe’s time and helped shape early psychological thought. In 229 pages plus four pages of Publisher's advertisements, in the original three-quarter leather over marbled boards, with six compartments to the spine, with titles and lines in gilt. There is shelfwear to the edges and corners. The title page is tanned. The first four leaves have a borer mark to the blank top left/right edge. There is scattered foxing limited to 13 leaves. The fold out plate has some loss as per the photograph and the splits along the lower joints have been repaired with clear archival tape. There are no loose, missing, stained, creased or damaged pages. There are two previous owner's pencil inscriptions to the front pastedown and to the front blank endpaper.
