Conversely, image offset occurs when the hand coloring transfers slightly to the text. 1792 Lamarck Histoire Naturelle This encyclopedic work spanning over 50 years and running to 201 volumes was the undertaking of an enterprising young publisher Charles-Joseph Panckoucke (1736-98), who got his start in the publishing world of the day by collaborating on the Encyclopedie of Diderot & d'Alembert. This latter work was to become a definitive record of the history of European thought and a remarkable reference for all aspects of eighteenth-century European civilization. From the onset, it was controversial, banned by the government & condemned by the Pope, causing it to become enormously popular. We are offering prints just a few prints from the volumes relating to Shells and Sea Creatures, published in 1792. The backdrop of the publication was the French Revolution, when, in 1793 Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette went to the guillotine. It was a time of great transformation in France & the reorganization in a democratic manner of many of the establishments previously dependent on the whims of royal patronage. The old Jardin des Plantes became the Musee National d'Histoire Naturelle (National Museum of Natural History), run by twelve professors in twelve different scientific fields, one of whom was Lamarck. It is with great pleasure that we offer these prints, which have undoubtedly been touched by those who participated in the French Revolution. The artists for the botanical section included none other than the brothers Redoute, Deseve & Fossier. Each original antique print measures approximately 8 1/4 inches by 11 inches, on strong, toned chain lined paper. There is no descriptive text but a copy of the title page will be provided. About Antique Prints We try to select antique prints in the best possible condition, with as few defects as possible. Nevertheless, these prints are often hundreds of years old and show the effects of time, as noted below 1. Most common is paper darkening, or toning, resulting in the paper becoming shades darker, from off white to light brown. We rarely offer very toned prints, unless the issue is particularly scarce. 2. Text offset occurs over time, when the text page is against the image and ink from the text makes lines on the image. Conversely, image offset occurs when the hand coloring transfers slightly to the text. Again, we rarely offer heavily offset prints. 3. Spotted or foxing is also common due to age and handling over a long period of time and while a small degree of foxing is common and acceptable, we avoid extensively foxed prints. SHIPPING Shipping is first class and we pack the prints flat and well protected in foam core, unless they are large, when we very carefully roll them with several protective layers.
