Robert Smith Surtees's six Sporting Books—Handley Cross (1843), Hawbuck Grange (1847), Mr. Sponge's Sporting Tour (1853), Ask Mamma (1858), Plain or Ringlets? (1860), and Mr. Romford's Hounds (1865)—are a cornerstone of Victorian sporting literature. These novels blend humor, satire, and keen social observation, capturing the idiosyncrasies of rural England and the fox-hunting culture of the time. Through memorable characters like the bumbling yet enthusiastic Jorrocks and the sly and opportunistic Mr. Sponge, Surtees offers an entertaining critique of English social structures and class distinctions. Richly illustrated in many editions, often by artists like John Leech and H. K. Browne ("Phiz"), the books vividly evoke the settings and characters, making them enduring favorites among enthusiasts of 19th-century literature and hunting lore. Together, these novels not only define Surtees's literary legacy but also provide a humorous yet insightful snapshot of Victorian country life.
